“Curiosity: the Key to Successful Lingua Franca Communication in Business“,
Ms. Eszter Sandor, Budapest Business School, Hungary
Place: Room F306
Time: 15.00 – 15.45
Description: The fact that English has become the global lingua franca in business entails that students of Business English have to be educated to use English in situations which are characterized by a high degree of unpredictability both in terms of the level of language used by the participants and the cultural assumptions they bring into the communicative event. As in most cases no native speakers are present, the norms of each interaction have to be worked out on the spot. Therefore, English speakers have to be flexible in their language use: They need skills to accommodate to their interlocutor and to connect with them on a personal level. For that they need to suspend existing cultural stereotypes, and show curiosity towards their interlocutors. The presentation will discuss how Business English as a Lingua Franca research can inform the methodology of teaching Business English.
