Description: Aim: to promote understanding of modern language learning approaches and linguistic diversity (descriptive vs. prescriptive approach to foreign language learning). The presentation of topic will be illustrated with examples from songs and advertisements. Questions and issues to consider:
– What is correct English?
– Which variety of English should we learn (in terms of pronunciation, grammar rules, lexicon)?
– Is there Standard Variety of English?
– The role of English as lingua franca.
– Englishes of the world.
Form: brief theoretical background (PPP), group work, discussions, short projects; basically interaction, sharing opinions on up-to-date linguistic problems, problems foreign language learners are currently facing.
